setting goals and taking actionFor all home based business owners one of the most difficult things to stay on top of is setting goals and taking action.  There is no one to push you.  There is no one to tell you that you are late.  It is all up to you, and if you don’t stay focused things can slip pretty fast.  This short article will provide some basic tips and tricks to help you stay focused when you feel things slipping.

We are all human, and from time to time our minds will wander.  This is normal, and it is also okay.  The brain NEEDS short breaks.  You cannot go 110% all of the time or you will burn out.  However, prolonged periods of inactivity in our business can really set us back.  That’s why setting goals and taking action almost every day is vital to our survival as home business owners.

With that being said, here are some tips you can implement to ensure you stay on track with your daily activities:

  • Remember Your Why – We all have personal reasons why we chose to start a home business.  Keep those reasons at the forefront of your mind, and remind yourself every day the reason why you got started.  This can really help keep you motivated.
  • Eliminate Distractions – Working from home is awesome, but it can pose a problem in the fact that there are a lot of distractions front and center every day.  It is important to try and eliminate them as much as possible.  If you find yourself partaking in activities that take your mind away from your work your business will suffer.
  • Plan Out Your Week – Do your best to plan out the week ahead.  If you give yourself a list of things you HAVE to do, you stand a good chance of meeting your goals.  Just flying by the seat of your pants can make it hard to have a clear direction, and you can end up bouncing all over the place, which is not very productive.  Each Sunday, make a point to plan out certain activities that you have to accomplish during the week, then schedule times to do them.
  • Get Up and Move Around Often – It happens.  Sometimes we find ourselves neck deep in a project and all of a sudden 4 hours has flown by.  While this is very productive, remember to get up and move around as much as possible.  You want to keep the blood flowing through your body and try not to sit tight for extended periods of time.  For me, I even find that doing some light exercise like jogging in place or jumping jacks can help get the blood flowing, and when the blood is flowing you seem to get more done.

Doing these things can help you to stay focused, so you can maximize your time while at work and ultimately achieve your goals.  The challenges of working a home based business are vast, and it is important to become as efficient as possible.
